The Edie Scholarship

Edie Opportunity
Each Discovery Involves Eleven Project
Project Edie O. is based on the educational premise that each invention or discovery is the result of acknowledging eleven core ethical principles of effective character education. Because each advancement towards a possibility is subconsciously fueled by the desire for social change, it is our belief that students of this mindset and caliber should not be financially limited in pursuing their dreams. In recognition of these beliefs, students who have been accepted into the Intellectual Practice and Project RED Programs of the Jeune Hope Chicago Initiative, will be given an opportunity to apply for the scholarship.

Emphasis will be placed on nurturing each student's strengths, and individual differences. Students will study concepts such as systems, change in patterns, and models. An emphasis will be placed on higher-level thinking, activity-based learning, and engaging students in the doing aspect of research via modular materials, particularly in the area of problem solving. Students will use technology as a tool and participate in activity-based learning by using real world problems and solving societal issues. Assessment of learning will include tracking of a portfolio, in addition to the maintenance of individual logs and reports, which will demonstrate the thinking processes necessary for doing work in a given discipline (e.g. inference, deductive reasoning, and the evaluation of arguments). Students will engage in planning and carrying out original research that will be monitored by highly qualified mentors and coaches with the goal in mind of developing a patentable invention. Your coach will meet you at any one of the 70+ Chicago Public Libraries.
Students will use variables and equations to solve real world scenarios with the help of hint and think beyond cards, and additionally monitor change, chance and condition. Mentors and coaches will use subject specific models to teach principles that help students realize patterns, generalizations, and measurement, in conjunction with various other research, algebra, operation and probability learning techniques. Program scoring and progress will be based on demonstrated advancement in project concepts, communication and vocabulary through the use of math journals and incremental learning strategies. Your coach will meet you at any one of the 70+ Chicago Public Libraries.
